From family pets to small farm herds, pigs require specialized veterinary care and calm, experienced handling. At Bear Creek Large Animal Clinic, we provide routine and preventive services designed specifically for pigs- whether they’re living in your home, your pasture, or your barnyard.

Preventive Care for Pet and Hobby Farm Pigs

Healthy pigs are easier to handle, more comfortable, and less likely to develop preventable problems. We offer a Pet Pig Preventive Care Package that combines routine health maintenance with a calm, low-stress experience- what many of our clients fondly call “piggy spa” days.

Our field anesthesia approach allows us to safely complete procedures without stress or struggle, keeping everyone, pig and human alike, comfortable.

Preventive care might include:

  • Hoof trimming and foot care
  • Tusk trimming (cut down and Dremel smooth)
  • Ear and eye cleaning
  • Internal and external parasite management
  • Routine wellness exams and weight assessment

We also provide guidance on nutrition, vaccination, and housing to support long-term health and minimize behavioral or mobility issues.

Surgical Services

Some surgeries are best done in a fully equipped clinic, while others can be handled safely on your property. We’ll recommend the safest option for your pig and work with our local partner clinic when hospital-level care is needed.

Surgical options include:

  • Swine ovariohysterectomy (spay)
  • Cryptorchid castration
  • Wound repair and minor soft-tissue procedures
  • Umbilical hernia repair

Spays are performed at our partnering facility to ensure full surgical monitoring and smooth recovery. Other procedures can often be completed on-site using field anesthesia.

Emergency and Urgent Care

Emergencies with pigs can develop quickly. From heat stress and injuries to sudden illness, we respond promptly for established clients and prioritize stabilization and comfort. We’ll work with you to determine the best next steps, including referral or continued field treatment when appropriate.

Common emergency concerns:

  • Injury or trauma
  • Heat stress or exhaustion
  • Sudden loss of appetite
  • Difficulty walking or standing

Emergency services are available for established clients only.
